DownBore Dynamics is developing a combustion-driven, programmable downhole seismic source delivering high-power, repeatable acoustic energy at depths unreachable by conventional surface equipment.
The gap is real: the seismic industry has relied on surface vibroseis and wireline sparkers for decades. DownBore Dynamics delivers acoustic energy at depth — closer to the formation, orders of magnitude more efficient, with programmable waveform control no legacy tool can match.
The DBD source uses rapid high-pressure pulsed gas combustion to produce controlled acoustic events downhole. Energy is released in a manner indirectly coupled to the wellbore and distributed over meters of borehole, preventing formation damage while delivering output energy on par with shaped explosive charges.
Unlike conventional wireline sparkers or surface vibroseis, the DBD platform operates in situ — near or within the target formation — maximizing signal-to-noise ratio at depth while maintaining full programmable control over frequency, pulse shape, and energy release rate.
Single-deployment, multi-shot operation with full software control of energy release rate, peak amplitude, and pulse timing. Designed for stacked acquisition workflows.
High power density output comparable to conventional explosive sources — without single-use consumables, borehole damage, or the regulatory burden of detonator-based systems.
Selectable wave mode enables both compressional and shear acquisition from a single tool, supporting full elastic characterization of the formation.
Operating at depth — near the target — eliminates the geometric spreading losses that plague surface seismic, enabling imaging in environments where surface equipment fails.
Multi-well array architecture enables distributed acoustic networks with self-calibration and coherent acquisition — a capability with no analogue in existing downhole tooling.
Designed around conventional O&G wireline infrastructure and standard wellhead access. No purpose-built rigs or specialized surface equipment required.
The DBD platform addresses a critical data gap across four distinct industries — each constrained by the same legacy limitation: inability to deliver high-power, controllable acoustic energy at depth.
Near-wellbore and inter-well seismic imaging at depth with signal fidelity that surface vibroseis cannot achieve in mature or complex reservoirs. Enables time-lapse 4D monitoring, fracture characterization, and production zone mapping from existing wellstock.
Enhanced Geothermal Systems require precise subsurface imaging at depths exceeding 3 km in hard, hot rock — an environment that defeats most surface-based methods. DBD delivers the downhole energy needed to map stimulated fracture networks and monitor reservoir evolution during and after injection.
CCS operations require high-confidence time-lapse monitoring of CO₂ plume migration and caprock integrity. The DBD source enables cost-effective repeat seismic surveys from permanent or re-deployed wellbore installations, without surface access constraints.
Underground and open-pit operations increasingly require real-time subsurface imaging for orebody extension, geomechanical hazard assessment, and drill-and-blast optimization. The DBD platform enables borehole-to-borehole seismic where surface access is limited and imaging resolution is critical.
DownBore Dynamics has built a structured IP foundation covering the full technology stack — from combustion source hardware and waveform control to network architecture and formation conditioning. All applications were filed with the USPTO.
All applications currently at provisional filing stage. PCT and non-provisional prosecution in planning.
